The DARK KNIGHT

Following on from the success of Batman Begins, director Chris Nolan again teams up with Christian Bale, to bring us the latest incarnation of the caped crusader; the Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight is in many critics opinion a masterpiece; predominantly for the performance of Heath Ledger in the role of the Joker. Though highly regarded, Ledger’s career was still struggling to get into top gear until this role came along – and Ledger duly delivered one of the most stunning performances of the current generation, if not, of all time.

All of this just adds to the sadness surrounding the actor’s passing before the film had been released. A post-humus Academy Award is still expected to be delivered.

Ledger owns the Dark Knight – which is some feat seeing as how the rest of the cast, led by Bale, delivers a fantastic performance in what is an epic film. This is the darkest Batman we have yet seen and the violence is on a scale that has been one of the calling cards of the latest generation of Batman releases.

The film is a must have for all film fans and will do due credit to the Bluray format when it is released as the visual and sound effects are stunning.

Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/The Joker does a fine job as does the Katie Holmes replacement Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes; the long-term love interest of Bruce Wayne.

Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman all reprise their roles to complete the stunning ensemble cast.

No punches are pulled throughout the film as the Joker wages war on the streets of Gotham and holds the entire city to ransom. The terror that grips the citizens and their reaction to living under such stress is central to the theme of this movie and the relevance of the subject to today’s post-9/11 world has not been lost on most audiences.

When released in the Bluray format, the Dark Knight is expected to become the biggest selling Bluray of all time within days.

As far as comic book adaptations go – throw out the form-book. This film is to Ghost Rider/Daredevil what Citizen Kane is to Porky’s. There is no correlation. Dark Knight stands alone in this genre like nothing that has been before. And when you look back to what Joel Schumacher, George Clooney, Val Kilmer and co. did to the franchise it is a wonderful credit to Nolan and his brother Jonathan (screenwriter) who have re-enlivened not only Batman but the entire genre with this Bluray epic.
